New Here?

Welcome! We know church shopping can be stressful and visiting a church for the first time can be hard! That’s why we want to give you the opportunity to learn about St. John’s and even attend a service online before joining us in person.

If you’re not yet ready to attend worship in person, feel free to explore the rest of our website, check out our social media accounts, and tune in on Sunday for our live worship service! If you enjoy what you see, do whatever feels right for you, whether that be visiting us next Sunday or watching online for another month. We love having you join us, whichever way you attend!

We’d love to have you join us Sunday! Here’s what you can expect:

Q: What services are offered?
A: We offer two services, with fellowship and Sunday School in between. Here are the details:

A Service of Word and Table - 8:15 - 9:15 a.m.
This service offers an abbreviated traditional service of worship that includes the weekly celebration of Holy Communion. Typically a small gathering, it is intimate and reflective in nature.

Sunday School - 9:15 - 10:15 a.m.
In the Wesleyan tradition, St. John's United Methodist Church offers a graded Sunday School program, with a nursery facility for infants and toddlers and classes for all ages and interests. Classes begin at 9:15 a.m. and end at 10:15 a.m. each Sunday.

Coffee & Connexions - 8:45 - 10:15 a.m.
Coffee and hot water (for tea or cocoa) are provided in the Garden Room (see map) for all to enjoy.

A Service of Word and Music - 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.
This service offers traditional liturgical worship with hymns, prayers of the people, a children’s sermon, scripture lesson and sermon. Holy Communion is served the first Sunday of each month. Throughout the academic year the Chancel Choir leads the congregation in worship and presents anthems, and the Choral Scholars offer Acts of Praise.

Q: Where is St. John’s?
A: St. John’s is located at 1501 University Avenue, on the corner of University and 15th. We are right across the street from Texas Tech. You can look for our colored banners hanging outside our sanctuary. Once here, you can find parking spaces reserved for first time visitors on the northwest side of our front parking lot, right in front of the sanctuary doors.

Q: Where do I go?
A: You can enter under the colored banners, using the sanctuary doors. There is a visitor table in the narthex (the small room before the sanctuary) with free bags full of St. John’s items and information.

Q: Will I be asked to raise my hand or stand as a new visitor?
A: Never! We’ll be happy to have you with us in worship but we won’t ask you to stand up and do a dance.

Q: How should I dress?
A: Some people wear shorts and sandals and others come in collared shirts and dresses. You’re welcome to wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Q: Do you have a nursery or children’s program?
A: Yes! While we encourage children and their families to experience weekly worship services together, we do offer a nursery during the 10:30 a.m. service for young children. To assist children staying in service, we have children’s activity bags full of fun games and activities located in the narthex. During the Sunday school hour, there are classes for each age range. Talk with a staff member on Sunday to learn more.
