Lubbock Crop Walk
Members of various local churches and organizations, including St. John’s, will be walking in the LUBBOCK CROP WALK, Sunday, November 6. We are walking to raise funds that will help stop hunger through the relief, self-help development, and refugee assistance programs of Church World Service. They’re ministering to the needs of poor and hungry people in some 80 countries and the United States, and are currently assisting communities affected by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Twenty-five percent of what we raise will go to the South Plains Food Bank.
Please come walk with us or sponsor a walker from St. John’s. Make a difference in the lives of those who must walk for food, for water, for safety. We walk because they walk!
LUBBOCK CROP WALK.
Date: Sunday November 6
Time: 1:30 pm registration - 2:00 pm Walk Begins
Location: St. John’s United Methodist Church
Lay Speaking Course
As part of the Fall Wonderful Wednesdays offerings, we will present the Lay Speakers Basic Training Course starting in November.
Lay Speakers (or Exhorters as they were called by John Wesley) have a rich historical tradition in the Methodist Church. Lay Speakers serve in many capacities. By definition, Lay Speakers are dedicated to "leading, caring and communicating."
Lay Speaker training is preparation for leadership in the congregation. Despite the connotations of the title, Lay Speakers are not just stand-ins or fill-ins for an empty pulpit. Lay Speakers fill leadership roles in every aspect of the church and congregation.
If you seek to better understand your role as a leader in our congregation and in the Methodist Church as a whole, then you will find no better way than this series of training.
The Basic Course is 5 weeks, a total of 10 hours of discussion, reflection, prayer and understanding. The classes will begin on November 9, and run through December 14. Classes will cover topics which include "Called by God", "Called to Leadership and Service", "Called to Grow in Faith", "Called to Witness and Teach", and "Called to Lead Worship."
If you are interested or need more information, please contact Dennis Howard at the Church office at 762-0123.

You may become a Patron by purchasing a table of 8 for $275 which reserves a table near the front of the room and gives you an opportunity to support the Missions of St. John’s. You may also purchase a table of 8 for $180, which will allow you to invite your friends and enjoy the evening together.
We are in need of donations of new items for the auction.
Examples are gift cards from restaurants, stores and entertainment venues. Put together a theme basket of items. Ask for donation of items from businesses to be auctioned off. Be creative and help the church raise money.

Questions
Before I bring questions that have been asked of me, I want to put a question to all of you.
What is it that St. John’s offers you that is of significant value? What is it about St. John’s that you find of such meaning that you invest your time, your effort, and your money, willingly and joyfully, to insure that this thing of value continues or grows?
It is an interesting question. Especially that term “invest.” Generally an investment is made with an expectation of a return. To carry the question a bit further, can you identify those things that you consider a return on your investment and are those returns valuable to you?
These are very personal questions and this is where I am going to stop and let you prayerfully consider your investment in St. John’s.
Blessings and Peace to you all,
Dennis K. Howard
